Food

Sing it with me: “Food Glorious Food…” That’s the title song from an old gun slinging Western I used to watch on TV when I was a kid. (That’s a lie; it’s from a song from the stage adaption of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist novel, but hey, I got a rep to keep up, right?)

Anyway, Food, it’s practically the second or third thing out of each of one or more of our mouths in the morning: “what’s for dinner?” Everything has to eat: plants and animals, the latter of which includes so-called mankind. Although we can actually go longer without food than we suspect, we have to eat. It is said, “some people eat to live, some people live to eat.” I understand that, I come from a family of “good eaters.” And, we like to cook.

In our house we are lucky in that, at least in our opinions, we all know how to cook (good stuff). We each have our sort of specialties: the lovely wife is the baker (breads, pies (chicken pie, yum), cookies, especially my “can’t live withouts” Biscotti…if it can be baked, she can bake it) we don’t allow her on the top of stove too much unless it is to do one of her fabulous French Provincial hearty stews; Bobby is the King of Quesadillas, grill chef extraordinaire, and has shown a proclivity for making sauces; I get to be the fry chef (because I know the secret… you just have to watch it!), and my spaghetti meat sauce is requested often. I also like to mix and match food, a fried egg on top of last night’s pizza (homemade, of course), for example.

Since this site is about our experiences in Costa Rica, and since food is such a big part of our lives in Costa Rica, the site naturally needed a Food Category. Check out our recipes. A lot of them are family recipes (I did a Family Cookbook in 1991 including recipes from practically all of my family), and some of them came out of the lovely wife’s extensive collection of cookbooks (they are her go-to gift), and we’ll tell you which ones they are and the book from which the recipe came.

Costa Rica is not known for its cuisine, but there are some terrific dishes, and of course they will also be included, as we cook them. Although we are not professional food photographers, we will also try to include a picture of what the dish looks like. Look around, enjoy. Buen provecha, bon apetite y pura vida.

Goulash With Grilled Italian Sausage

Goulash With Grilled Italian Sausage

This is definitely not the same Goulash that you remember from the school cafeteria when you were a kid.  The combination of tomato soup and tomato chunks keeps the meal from drying out, even if you throw it in the oven.  Adding Italian Sausage enhances the flavor of the ground hamburger.  ...
